It’s All CES 2023! Show #1918 Week of January 12th 2023
AMAZING! Next month we’ll be starting year 18 of The Giz Wiz Show!
(The first Giz Wiz Show – called The Daily Giz Wiz back then – was February 20th 2006!) If it wasn’t for our loyal supporters, the Giz Wiz Show would be gone. If you’d like to support OMGchad & DickDe in our independent venture (we pay for everything ourselves, including travel) just click the Patreon link at the top of our show web page: https://www.gizwiz.tv
We start off the year with a look at four brand new gadgets and gizmos from CES 2023! Then in Dick’s Gadget Warehouse spot, we’ll look at a ‘brand new’ gadget we saw at CES 2016 and see if it ever made it into the marketplace and managed to stay around for the seven years up to now! Chad and our producer Josh braved the 115,000 crush of people and found a dozen gadgets you probably never heard about before, so we’ll do four a week this week and for the next two weeks!
Hydrofoils are nothing new, but this is claimed to be the world’s first totally electric hydrofoil! It’s the Candela C-8 with a fully retractable C-FOIL system. This sleek electric computer controlled hydrofoil is 28 feet long and can accommodate 8 people. The top speed is 30 knots, and it has a range of about 57 miles at 20 knots. The hydrofoil system reduces water friction by 80%. So you fly above the surface of waves with no bouncing or rolling and no engine noise or harmful emissions. It’s a100% carbon fiber hull which reduces the overweight. In shallow mode, the foils and Candela C-POD are protected by the hull. In extreme weather conditions that prevent foiling, it can be driven as a conventional boat, but that of course will mean a reduced range. There are several consumer versions with many options. The base price starts at $390,000.

Hey you kids, come out of that shower, and come out clean!!
Getting Kids To Switch From Bath To Shower Can Be Easy With Shower Power Buddy By Ampere!
We’ve done other Shower Power devices on The Giz Wiz in the past, including the “disco” Shower Power that lights up in different colors as you shower. New from CES 2023 is their Shower Power Buddies. This is a kid-friendly version of their water-powered Shower Power speakers. With Shower Power the water pressure actually generates the power needed for the lights and the audio. You can easily replace your existing shower head with one of three cute, swappable designs, including of course, a duck! But wait, there’s more! The colorful LED lights can alert the child, or more likely the child’s parent, when the water temperature may be too hot to use! It launches later in 2023 and the price is expected to be in the $99.99 to $149.99 range.

Adjust the lightness & darkness of your sunglasses with a button or an app!
Chad Tries The New Dusk Glasses By Ampere.
Yes, for much of the country we’re in gloomy winter weather, but with sunny days hopefully on the way you might want to know about these smart glasses. They’re the Dusk Smart Sunglasses from Ampere and it’s a way to help you protect your eyes in bright sunlight. Dusk is said to be the world’s first smart sunglasses with app-controlled electro-chromatic lenses. (Hope I got that right.) What do they do? They let you dial the amount of light that passes through the transition lenses. You can dial an exact amount with the app, or use the buttons on the glasses to choose one of four settings. But wait, there’s more! These sunglasses also provide open-ear audio so you can forego wearing your earbuds if you want. They also provide a space for an Apple AirTag in the included charging case. That way you can track your sunglasses should you misplace them, or someone walks away with them. MSRP $299.99. There’s a Dusk-lite version for $199.00 which leaves out the audio option.

Watch Your Pee For Clues!
There was a lot of talk about this gadget at CES 2023.
It’s the Withings U Scan and here’s just a bit about it:
Just 90 mm in diameter, this health lab sits within any toilet bowl. (Yes, you read that right.) You install it in your toilet bowl.) It provides an immediate snapshot of the body’s balance by monitoring and detecting a large variety of biomarkers found in urine while also offering actionable advice for health improvements. Cost? $499.99. Now we know that Chad likes the idea of gathering info on bodily functions, but he’s not so interested in this device. Why? The cost is one factor, but questions like these come up. “How do you install it in your toilet?” How do you retrieve the cartridge that you pee on? How do you charge it?
Also the info gathered via an app is more for a health professional to interpret than for you to be able to do at home. We’ll have to see how well this one does when it hits the marketplace.

Dick’s Gadget Warehouse
This week we finish up with a unique gadget we saw at CES 2018! And we wonder, where is it now?
Vinyl records are once again a big deal! But what do you think about Kodak introducing an 8mm film camera?
At CES 2018, I walked by the Kodak booth and thought I saw an old Kodak Super8 camera on display. I was wrong. Yes, it was a Kodak Super8 camera, and it looked like a retro model, but it was a brand new camera that was “set to go on sale soon.” It uses Super 8mm film! Film that you shoot and mail off to Kodak just the way you did 40 or 50 years ago! Unlike the old super 8 camera, this one has a large flip-out 4-inch LCD screen. It shows what the camera is recording on the 8MM cartridge film and it flickers the way old 8MM film did when it ran through a projector. There are other modern features on this camera too, like a Micro HDMI out that will let you monitor the feed on an external monitor. There is a built-in light meter to aid with exposure setting. There’s a camera settings wheel that is very reminiscent of the early iPods. The camera ships with Ricoh 6mm f1.2 lens, but it has a C-mount so professional photographers, which I think this camera is aimed at, can use others lenses they already own and love. There is no audio recorded onto the film, but the camera has a mic input and headphone monitor. Sound is recorded on an SD card using wav format. The camera makes markers on the film so can sound sync them later. The camera was said to be around $3000. An 8MM cartridge of film, including processing, and a digital copy, and a copy online for you to use would be about $100. It was expected to start shipping spring 2018. It’s five years later, and it’s still on the Kodak website & can you still sign up for updates, but the page has been updated in 5 years. So, I guess this can count this as a non-starter!
