Show #1919 Week of January 19th 2023
AMAZING! Next month we’ll be starting year 18 of The Giz Wiz Show!
(The first Giz Wiz Show – called The Daily Giz Wiz back then – was February 20th 2006!) If it wasn’t for our loyal supporters, the Giz Wiz Show would be gone. If you’d like to support OMGchad & DickDe in our independent venture (we pay for everything ourselves, including travel) just click the Patreon link at the top of our show web page: https://www.gizwiz.tv
We start off the year with look brand new gadgets and gizmos from CES 2023! Then Dick’s Gadget Warehouse we’ll look at a ‘brand new’ gadget we saw at CES 2016 and see if it ever made it into the marketplace and managed to stay around for the seven years up to now!
Four More Brand New Gadgets From CES 2023!
Something very different from Tylenol
It’s the SmartCheck Digital Ear Scope From Children’s TYLENOL. Basically, this is a way to capture videos and images of a child’s ears with your iPhone. Then you can share it with your healthcare or a telemedicine provider to help them check for ear infections remotely. Now it doesn’t work with Android phones, but is said to be compatible with most iPhone models 6s and newer with some exceptions. You can view a full list of compatible phones on the company website. As you’ll on this week’s show, you slide the SmartCheck device over your smartphone’s camera to turn it into a personal otoscope (ear scope). The spokesperson in the video is careful to tell Chad ‘the results are not for the parent to figure out, but for a professional to use. MSRP: $79.99

A Pillow That Says It Can Help You Stop Snoring By Moving Your Head While You Sleep!
This is one of the stranger demos at CES 2023. Motion Pillow 2023 from 10minds monitors your snoring sounds and also senses the position of your head on the pillow. When the attached monitoring device (called the Solution Box) hears snoring sounds it uses an air pressure sensor to detect the location of the head on the pillow. Then it can inflate sections built into the pillow to gently move your head to reset your breathing and stop the snoring. (So it’s not like their ‘deep breathing’ demo pillow which I guess was designed to get attention at CES as folks walked by.) The spokesman said it’s available in Korea now and is expected to be in US later this year and the price would be $600 to $700. (That price seemed high, but checking on Amazon I found a pillow that also moves the head when it detects snoring and that one was $499.99 to $599.99.

When I heard $600 to $700 dollars for the inflatable pillow I did a web search to see if there anything like this already and what the cost was. I found the Nitetronic Z1 Smart Anti-Snore Pillow. It seems to do something very similar and it was $499.99. Here’s a link to where I found it.

A Fun New Kind Baseball!
It’s called the Playfinity Base Ball. Playfinity is a Norwegian sports-tech company on a mission to create more active fun for kids. After five years of development, three products on the market, thousands of jumpers and players globally, they say: it’s a very exciting roadmap. As you’ll learn on this week’s show, although the Playfinity baseball looks exactly like a normal baseball, it has electronics inside to keep track of many games and activities. And because of that, you’ll see the X right on the side of the ball warning “not to hit it with a bat!” Right now there are 7 games that can be played with the Playfinity Ball, with more on the way. It can be updated via Wifi and their app helps with the rules, scoring, etc. MSRP: $99.00.

An Earring That Provides Hearing!
Talk about an earphone! The H1 Nova is from Nova Products, a Munich-based start-up, is the creator of what they say is the first & only Audio Earrings. The NOVA H1 Audio Earrings are a pair of wireless earphones embedded in a freshwater pearl that is held on a silver- or gold-plated clip. Apart from the small size, what’s revolutionary is that these earrings feature earphone functionality. They are placed on the earlobe and look like regular earrings while providing the opportunity to the user to listen to music and make phone calls with them. The company says they use technology called Directional Sound that sends sound output from the earlobe directly to your ear canal, avoiding any sound spreading away and allowing the user to keep the music and conversations private. In other words, only you can hear in your ear. Coming to the US in summer 2023, for $650 or so. You’ll see Chad listen to them while he’s wearing them!

Dick’s Gadget Warehous
We go back 9 years to CES 2014 to learn about the Myris (as in ‘my iris’) a way to sign onto websites without a user name or password. The company that makes it, EyeLock, says only DNA is more accurate! Since no two irises are alike, the company says chances of a false match are less than one in two trillion. Setting it up is said to be as easy as using a mirror. Myris looks at more than 240 points on each iris and generates a unique 2048-bit digital signature. To authenticate your ID, it needs to match up with your actual eyes. Photos, video recordings or other fakes won’t work. It’s powered through the USB connection, so no batteries are needed. And up to five people can have individually protected accounts. Secure communication and military grade encryption with AES 256. Price was expected to be under $300. Find out what we discovered about this device on this week’s show. It’s actually quite interesting.

For talk about the Myris, start at about 23:00
We also talked about the Tethercell AA Smart Battery Adapter on this show. It was a way to use one of their cells to control on/off a device that used AA batteries via their app. Tethercell did make it to the marketplace for a short time. They were even on Amazon, but the rating and reviews were terrible. Chad demonstrated it during the January 2014 show (link below) and found the app was awful. Spoiler Alert: It seems now to have disappeared from sale.

We have one more week of CES 2023 gadgets and then in February, we’ll be back to showing your warehouse videos and reading your emails, so keep sending them in! Thank you.
