Show #1923 Week of February 16th 2023
AMAZING! This month we start year 18 of The Giz Wiz Show!
The first Giz Wiz Show – called The Daily Giz Wiz back then – was February 20th 2006! If it wasn’t for our loyal supporters, the Giz Wiz Show would be gone. When the mouse in your house isn’t welcome. (But Mickey would be!)
So there was a mouse in my house and I thought I would try to him out. That’s when I saw the Multi-functional Mice Repellent Plug-in on Amazon. I never had any luck with an electronic pest remover, but this this one had incredible reviews on Amazon. And it was a 4-In-1 Rodent Repellent equipped with 3 speakers emitting different sounds to cause intense auditory stress to rodents, and 9 powerful LED strobe lights to target their eyesight, creating a hostile environment for them to live in and discouraging them from entering the area protected. Well, I bought it! It was expensive, like $55. Did it work? (Spoiler, I already got a refund.) BUT, I point out situations in my video where it probably would work great! More than 1900 reviews give it 4.7 out of 5 stars!

Was under $50.00 on 2/17/23 https://amzn.to/3I69btN
The one in the photo looks exactly the same as mine (the box mine came in has no brand name) and this one is even cheaper: https://amzn.to/3SoS2R3

A Chad CES 2023 Extra!
Keep your coffee hot, even as you travel!
We did an Ember Mug on The Giz Wiz Show some time back. It’s a coffee mug that can keep your coffee at the temperature you like best. At CES 2023 Chad saw the upcoming, updated version of its heated travel mug. What’s new is that Travel Mug 2+, will work with Apple’s Find My app. The updated mug will have an integrated speaker that can play a sound to help you know where mug is. It’s same kind of technology Apple has in their AirPods Pro 2. The Travel Mug 2+ will appear in the Find My app on iPhone, iPad, or Mac and with updated firmware, and is said to also work with the Find Items app on the Apple Watch. Like some other Ember mugs you can set your favorite drinking temperature and the Travel Mug 2+ will it at that temp for up to three hours. As you’ll see in the video there’s a digital display on the mug which you can adjust with the plus and minus buttons. MSRP: $199.99. It will available this coming Spring.
This looks like the one in the video BUT IT’S NOT THE NEWEST ONE WITH THE ‘FIND ME’ FEATURE SO IF YOU WANT THAT, IT’S BEST TO WAIT. https://amzn.to/3YR4BGG

Thou Shalt Not Spill!
Or according to company: May the Centripetal Force be With You.
If you have to carry a cup of coffee or even soup in a mug, the SpillNot provides an excellent solution. It looks like a simple hanging tray, but when you place your cup, or glass on it, the liquid doesn’t spill or slosh, and the cup does not slide when carried. You’ll see me walk up and down stairs with a bowl full of water and not spill a drop on this week’s show. People say you can even spin a cup in the air without spilling if you practice, but the company says this: Warning – There are limits. The SpillNot is science, not magic. If bumped, spillage may occur. Sudden movements and jerks may cause spills. Not for use with liquids that are hot enough to scald. Not for use in moving vehicles. Not for children under 3 years of age. Under $20. Great ratings on Amazon.

Chad’s Crappy Corner
Chad’s Crappy Corner and his new theme for February as picked by our loyal Patreon friends is “Fire Gadgets”.
Chad’s 3rd Fire gadget is the Romway Portable Tabletop Fireplace.
It’s also called a Fire Pit, Mini Fire Pit ,or Tabletop Fireplace for Indoor and Outdoor Use. Amazon says the base is made of durable concrete. It’s small, so you can take it anywhere. You’ll see Chad light it on his dining room table. It does add a warm and inviting light to the room. It uses 70% or 91% Iso-propyl alcohol as fuel. Chad shows us it’s pretty easy to ignite and extinguish with the lid that comes with the device. Although it says on Amazon the flame can last approximately an hour & 30 minutes, listen to Chad’s warning. He says the exterior gets really hot after about 25 to 30 minutes once lit! A while back I showed a bigger version of a tabletop fireplace with a glass tube on the show. I almost burned my hands when I tried to move after it was lit for about 35-40 minutes! So beware of letting the flame burn for too long. Chad said he paid $20 for his. When I looked online and there are dozen of these for sale, but as Chad pointed out, this about the lowest price one.

Dick’s Gadget Warehouse
Our email this week is from Doug Ferguson who tells about an amazing he got on a high-end movie camera that was a big deal from long, long ago.
Hey guys,
I was reminded of this on my shelf in my media room when you were talking about the Kodak 8mm movie camera a few weeks ago.
Doug Ferguson
I did a web search for the Bolex H8 and found used they can sell for a lot of money. Doug said he paid a $1 for his. It looks like it might be worth a lot more if he wishes to sell it:

How To Submit Your Video For The Gadget Warehouse & Win An Autographed Copy of MAD Magazine.
We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show! Here’s what we’re looking for! Your home shot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:
I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won’t get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, “family friendly” language applies.
–
I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can’t market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it’s a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.
–
My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don’t have a warehouse. It doesn’t matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you’re still hanging on to it.
–
My Favorite Gadget (favorite old, or favorite new): Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be a new gadget you just bought too.
–
Post them on YouTube and send us the link! We’ll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that’s unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you’ll earn a tiny amount of fame (hopefully). And if you live in the US, you’ll also get an autographed 38+ year old Alfred E. Neuman picture and a MAD surprise (most likely the current issue of MAD.) But no matter where you live outside of US, I can autograph an Alfred E. Neuman photo to you, scan it & email you a high res copy if we show your video. Just print it out, frame it, or just hang it up and no one will know it’s a copy. We’ve tested it out and fans say they look terrific! If you submitting warehouse videos for a second, third time, etc., you’ll get the current issue of MAD as a thank you.
All show submissions go to mail@gizwiz.tv
Email of the week:
Talking about The Giz Wiz Show coming up to it’s 17th Anniversary, Bill Holmes writes us:
Hi I have listened to just about all of them I think.
You were talking about other shows that might be as long running. TWIT started in April of 2005.
Security now followed in August 2005
The tech guy did start in 2004 but was not put in to podcast form until a year later when a teenager called the show to tell Leo to try putting it online.
So your show would have been the fourth one on TWIT.
Then Windows weekly started in September of 2006
The longest running podcast I listened to is Geek News Central which started in October of 2004. And they have had the same sponsor since July of 2005. He does the podcast awards as well.
So Adam Curry and Dave Wiener are credited with starting it all in 2004. Leo jumped in a year later in 2005 very early but not the first or longest running tech podcaster.
