Show #1931 Week of April 13th, 2023
AMAZING! We’ve starting year 18 of The Giz Wiz Show!
The first Giz Wiz Show – called The Daily Giz Wiz back then – was February 20th 2006! If it wasn’t for our loyal supporters, the Giz Wiz Show would be gone. If you’d like to support OMGchad & DickDe in our independent venture (we have no ads) just click the Patreon link at the top of our show web page: www.gizwiz.tv
In host chat we paid tribute to Al Jaffee, the man who created “The MAD Fold-in” and “Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions!” The Giz Wiz worked with Jaffee for more than 50 years at MAD. For a look at everything Jaffee did for MAD visit: www.madcoversite.com. And type: Al Jaffee in search.
We start with a video from the New York International Car Show.
What if you own an electric car and ‘break down’. At the car show I learned that AAA is expanding its capabilities and membership perks by creating innovative roadside solutions geared toward electric vehicle owners. Greg Brannon, Director Automotive Engineering and Industry Relations told me that AAA has started a new phase of mobile electric charging solutions in 14 markets across the country. This is the second pilot of its kind that AAA has brought to the marketplace in the last decade. The purpose of the first pilot, launched in 2010, was to explore a few prototype technologies that could be used to charge electric vehicles at the roadside. After 10 years of service, all the original prototype vehicles (five total) were retired. AAA took learning from that pilot to inform this next iteration. Range anxiety has been the number one barrier between consumers and wider EV adoption. AAA can help ease this anxiety with specialized trucks equipped with mobile electric vehicle chargers that provide enough range to get drivers home or to the nearest charging station.
AAA also has a lot of info on their website if you’re interested in buying an EV, plus a list of states that already have trucks equipped to help members who already own an EV. The link is below:

What Is That Strange Green Thing “What The Heck Is It?” Gadget?
Pull open a flat strange green gadget and you’ll have the Genrics Pour Over Coffee Filter. The company you can use it two ways – with a #2 paper filter (not included) to get a cup of coffee quickly. Or, use it with the reusable metal filter, included. The company says: To get a cup of strong coffee, let the coffee grounds fully dissolve, it takes 5-10 minutes. Huh? By then, people complained the coffee was cold! You’ll see my demo which produced a really weak cup of coffee. But if you worked with it, you might find it works for you. Chad liked the fact that it’s the most compact filter holder he ever saw. It even comes with a clip to hang on a backpack. And it was inexpensive when I bought mine. $7.99 early April 2023. UPDATE: What?? On 4/15/23 I checked Amazon and it was almost $16.00! If you’re interested in buying one, maybe wait a few days to see if it drops back to the 50% off price.

Socks For Your Chairs?
Yes, it’s a real thing!
I have a small folding wooden table that I move around my apartment for many different situations. The table makes a terrible screeching sound if you drag it, and if you lift it up, the legs instantly start to close, often on my fingers. So I needed a solution and I found one.
It’s NancyProtectz, said to be the original furniture sock with rubberized grips on the inside to keep them in place. These come in different sizes and colors making it easy and convenient to match for the various chair (or small table) legs in your home. I think it will protects floors from scratches, as least it does for me. They also reduce the sound of screeching furniture on the floor. Easy to install and stretches to fit most furniture leg shapes. See size chart and color selection on Amazon. I bought small for my table. Set of 8 was $13.99 when I bought mine early April, 2023.

Chad’s Crappy Corner
Chad polled our loyal Patreons and they voted on his new theme for April. And that theme is “Cheap Gadgets for the Bathroom”. Chad’s 2nd cheap gadget is the weirdly named LPHUMEX Led Vanity Mirror Lights. Amazon says: Hollywood Style Vanity Make Up Light, 10ft Ultra Bright White LED, Dimmable Touch Control Lights Strip, for Makeup Vanity Table & Bathroom Mirror, Mirror Not Included. (Did anyone think the mirror would be included for under $19?)
No wall or holes drilling. No assembly or electrical wiring is required, just stick firmly these led vanity lights to a wall, mirror, or mirror frame and you’re good to go! These makeup mirror lights are waterproof. Smart Touch Dimmer – Come with smart touch dimmer, touch to adjust brightness and turn off/on. Chad paid under $19.00 for his.
And Chad’s take: Chad liked the way they light the mirror, but thought all the wiring make the whole thing like ‘cheap and trashy’. Also you can’t control the light temperature. They are pretty much white light, and can be adjusted to warm white. But he said if you have no light around a mirror and you might think this is better than nothing at under $19.00.

How To Submit Your Video For The Gadget Warehouse & Win An Autographed Copy of MAD Magazine.
We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show! Here’s what we’re looking for! Your home shot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:
I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won’t get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, “family friendly” language applies.
–
I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can’t market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it’s a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.
–
My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don’t have a warehouse. It doesn’t matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you’re still hanging on to it.
–
My Favorite Gadget (favorite old, or favorite new): Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be a new gadget you just bought too.
–
Post them on YouTube and send us the link! We’ll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that’s unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you’ll earn a tiny amount of fame (hopefully). And if you live in the US, you’ll also get an autographed 38+ year old Alfred E. Neuman picture and a MAD surprise (most likely the current issue of MAD.) But no matter where you live outside of US, I can autograph an Alfred E. Neuman photo to you, scan it & email you a high res copy if we show your video. Just print it out, frame it, or just hang it up and no one will know it’s a copy. We’ve tested it out and fans say they look terrific! If you submitting warehouse videos for a second, third time, etc., you’ll get the current issue of MAD as a thank you.
All show submissions go to mail@gizwiz.tv

Email of the week:
Adam in San Diego emails us:
Hey Dick and Chad,
I came across this old advertisement from from a company here where I live in San Diego that used to make hard disks for various companies, including Apple and IBM. Unclear what year it was exactly, but wow what a great deal! I’ll take 2!
p.s If you look closely you can see that “5 megabytes are also available for $2,898.00”
And in case you care, I drove by and that business location is still open but it’s now a commercial painting company.
