The Giz Wiz Show # 1816 – Thursday 1/28/21 Independent Show #295
This week we finish our look at some gizmos and gadgets from the Virtual 2021 CES Show!
We start with a CES 2021 Best of Innovation Award in the Smart Home category.
This is something really different. It’s a pet door that comes with a full sized door! Huh? Read on. The company says their myQ Pet Portal is a secure and convenient way to make sure your dog can go outside when they need to, while giving the pet own access at any time, through their smartphone. (Door should obviously open to let the dog into a secure area, like a fenced in backyard.) It works for dogs as small as 10 lbs. up to 90 lbs. and includes safety sensors to ensure safe passage. They add that traditional retrofit dog doors can leave your home exposed to the elements, pesky critters, and other unwanted guests, whereas their design features an auto-close and lock system that triggers after your pet traverses the opening. A two-way camera with audio enables real-time and recorded viewing of a pet’s comings and goings so you can see what is happening at all times. With the myQ Pet Portal app, pet parents can customize alerts, set preferences for how Fido can enter/exit the portal and get daily reports on a pet’s comings and goings. It retails for less than half of what many pet owners spend annually on a dog walker. The professionally installed myQ Pet Portal is now available for pre-order on the company website starting at $2,999.00

Chad Finds A Really Different Recycle Gadget At Virtual CES 2021.
It’s an amazing automated recycling gadget called Lasso. It has smart scanning and accepts your used materials using internal sensors, cameras and AI machine learning. If an item is not recyclable, Lasso simply returns it to you. No more recycling confusion. Lasso tracks your items in real-time, and you can even check products for recyclability on the move before buying them, with their in-app bar code scanner. The company says used materials can become valuable products. Processing delivers the consistency and purity required for close-loop recycling and remanufacture. Lasso can grind it, crush it, shred it. Plastic, metals and glass are broken down separately, reducing to a fraction of their size and maintaining valuable purity throughout. 74Db is said to be Lasso’s loudest process, which is quieter than the spin cycle of a modern washing machine. Once processed, Lasso channels your purified products into the storage container at the base of the appliance – safe and secure until it’s time for Lasso to collect them. When storage is approaching capacity, Lasso automatically notifies you via the smartphone app – required just 3-8 times per year. When collection is due, simply detach Lasso’s storage container and leave it at the curb. Lasso’s dimensions: Height 49.2″ / Width 23.6″ / Depth 35.4″ / Weight 265 lbs / Needs electricity and plumbed water. At a TED talk the price of the unit was expected to be $3500 to $4000. But it has the ability to become cash positive according to the Lasso website: Lasso will be marketing and selling the closed-loop recycled products produced by households. The sale price of the Lasso recycled products will vary due to future market forces.

The Ultimate Bath Experience!
At the Virtual CES 2021 Jonathon Bradly, Kohler Smart Home Innovation Lead, introduced the Kohler Stillness Bath. This is something to behold, assuming you have a really big bathroom- and budget! Kohler, one of the best known high tech kitchen and bathroom equipment retailers has been around since 1873. Their new Stillness Bath draws its inspiration from Japanese forest bathing. It starts with water filling from the bottom of the bath, overflowing into the wood moat to create a soothing sound. Full spectrum lighting surrounds the bath as mist envelopes the surface of the Stillness Bath. Finally, essential oils can be added to emits invigorating aromas. Your bathroom is transformed into a spa-like environment for quiet mindfulness, except maybe for you using voice commands via Alexa or Google Assistant. The Stillness Bath offers a sanctuary for self-care and well-being. And hopefully the water display, light, mist and aromas converge to help you forget it costs about $16,000 and probably some major bathroom alterations for the full, complete bath experience. But wait, there’s LESS! If you just to control the temperature and depth of the water, that’s about $8700.00. If you want to add fog and aroma therapy, you’ll need to add the “Experience Tower” and that’s brings it up to around $11,000. The full Stillness experience is about $16,000 and that will be available around November 2021.

A Different Dick’s Gadget Warehouse This Week.
A Modern Digital Piggy-Bank For Kids.
At CES 2019 Chad & I thought this was a digital take on the ‘piggy-bank’. Well, it’s a heck of a lot more complicated than that! Here’s info from the company: “In our increasingly cashless world, it’s more and more difficult for children to understand the value of money. Pigzbe is a (very) smart device and educational app that teaches kids 6+ great saving, spending and earning habits through play. It’s one of the first ever family products built using the blockchain. Digital money, contactless payments, in-app purchases and crypto currency are all things they need help to understand. It’s hard to get to grips with money if you can’t touch the notes or feel the coins! We wanted to find a way to make digital money physical, so children can touch, play and experiment with it. The same way we did with the coins in our piggy-banks.
From the Giz Wiz: In checking their website for this show it seems they’ve added new currency. It’s very bewildering. But perhaps a six year old would understand better than we did. And it’s almost $70!
And now it’s 2021 & Chad finds this:
Be sure to watch this week’s show as Chad explains more about Pigzbe and what might have contributed to it failing.

We’ll be back to showing YOUR warehouse videos on the next Giz Wiz Show!
We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show! Here’s what we’re looking for! Your home shot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:
I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won’t get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, “family friendly” language applies.
–
I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can’t market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it’s a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.
–
My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don’t have a warehouse. It doesn’t matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you’re still hanging on to it.
–
My Favorite Gadget (favorite old, or favorite new): Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be a new gadget you just bought too.
–
Post them on YouTube and send us the link! We’ll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that’s unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you’ll earn a tiny amount of fame (hopefully). And if you live in the US, you’ll also get an autographed 38+ year old Alfred E. Neuman picture and a MAD surprise (most likely the current issue of MAD.) But no matter where you live outside of US, I can autograph an Alfred E. Neuman photo to you, scan it & email you a high res copy if we show your video. Just print it out, frame it, or just hang it up and no one will know it’s a copy. We’ve tested it out and fans say they look terrific! If you submitting warehouse videos for a second, third time, etc., you’ll get the current issue of MAD as a thank you.
All show submissions go to mail@gizwiz.tv

Letter of the week:
Hi Dick and Chad,
After watching this past weeks GizWiz with the different types of masks I came across this one on IndieGoGo:
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/blanc-the-only-full-face-modular-mask#/
I think this one is even more outrageous than some of the ones you showed.
Love the show, keep them coming. Thanks, Henning aka TheGreatDane – Proud Patreon
