This week we take a look a 3 gadgets from Food Tech 2021, another in-person event that has gone virtual for this year.
We start off with the very versatile Anova Precision Oven.
Info from the company: The first combi-oven with pro-level features for the home cook. The Anova Precision Oven is a countertop combi-oven for the home, with all of the features of a pro-level combi-oven at a fraction of the cost. Did you know your oven can fluctuate up to 60°F while trying to hit your set temperature? The Anova Precision Oven solves that problem and then some. Sous vide quality in half the time. Using the Oven’s Wet Bulb sensor, steak and other meats will cook to sous vide precision, every time. But unlike traditional sous vide, the Oven lets you raise the cooking temperature while continuously monitoring doneness with the Food Probe. You can cook sous vide up to 50% faster without sacrificing perfection. Steam makes bread better than ever. Watch through the glass as your sourdough springs up, without stressful hacks. An easy-fill external water tank will keep you cooking with 24 hours of continuous steam, no plumbing (or spritzers) required. With the Wi-Fi connected Anova Precision Oven App, you can set your Oven remotely and monitor the process from anywhere. Start cooking with one tap from a collection of easy-to-follow recipes made exclusively for Anova. Save all your favorites to make over and over again. Exterior (W,D,H): 22.4 x 17.7 x 14.1 in / It weighs about 50 pounds and has a 1.2 cubic ft capacity. $599.99. Price as of 2/6/2021.

BonBowl Lets You Cook And Eat Out Of The Same Bowl.
Meet the BonBowl. The BonBowl is perfect if you’re cooking for one, or need a way to cook in a small space like on a boat or a dorm room, or I guess even in a motel room. The BonBowl has two parts, the induction cooktop base and a specially designed bowl that fits on top of it. What’s clever is that you cook and eat out of the bowl. That cuts down on the cooking space and clean up time. Because it uses induction, which is sort of cooking with magnets, the cooking surface doesn’t get hot and the heat is trapped inside the bowl, reducing the chance of burns or fires while cooking. The cooktop is small 8″ x 8″ x 2.5″ and the bowl is said to be dishwasher safe. The company says induction cooking heats twice as fast as gas and electric stoves of similar size. Because the bowl and stove are small, the unit draws only 500 watts. Most induction cookers I see listed on Amazon all draw 1800 watts, so this one is better for small kitchens, campers, boats, motels, dorms, etc. The MSRP is $149.00, so you are paying a premium for the compact size as you’ll learn if you shop for other units online. The BonBowl includes the Cooktop + Bowl + one lid. It also includes free shipping within the US.

Ever Hear Of An Electric Spoon?
Okay, so it’s not exactly an electric spoon, but it is a spoon that ‘adds a mild electric current to your food. It’s SpoonTEK from Tasteboosters which they call a new tongue sensory utensil. They say that the mild electric current excites the taste buds to enhance flavor, heighten taste and improve after-taste. So how does it work? You hold SpoonTEK normally with your finger making contact with the electrode on the handle. Food makes contact with the electrode in the spoon bowl. An LED light on the handle will glow to indicate that the SpoonTEK system is working and delivering a mild electric current that passes through the food you are eating. You won’t feel it, but your taste buds will feel it. The company feels SpoonTEK offers new taste experiences, new recipes for a healthier diet with less sugar & salt, and a new appreciation for tongue sensory. Made with high quality, food safe materials, and simple to use. Lowest price was $29.00 on their Indiegogo page on 2/5/20. That can change at any time. Since this was a virtual event I did not get to try this spoon.
Here’s their amusing indiegogo video: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/meet-spoontek-a-spoon-that-elevates-taste#/

Chad’s Crappy Corner And His New Theme For February.
For February our loyal Patreon picked ‘drinking gadgets’ for Chad’s Crappy Corner theme.
Chad’s first pick of the month is Ball Aluminum Cups – The Ultimate 100% Recyclable Cold-Drink Cup.
What caught Chad’s attention with these 20 oz. Cups? Easy, the fact that they are said to be INFINITELY RECYCLABLE! Made from 100% aluminum that recycles over and over without losing quality – unlike plastic cups, which end up in landfills. Here’s what else Amazon says about them: EXTRAORDINARILY STURDY: Never worry about our cup giving in to a firm grip or large beverage. A BETTER COLD-DRINK EXPERIENCE: Delivers a unique, cold-drink experience that is superior to plastic – we call it the “Cool Touch” experience. MADE IN THE USA: Lightweight yet sturdy design allows for refills, offering greater value vs. single-use plastic cups. Enjoy them to reduce daily dishwashing and to elevate get-togethers and special occasions like birthday parties, holiday gatherings and weddings. 10 cups – about $9 – that’s 90 cents each. Also available 30 cups about $20 – a bit under 70 cents each.
And Chad’s take: Chad likes these a lot because of the “Infinitely Recycable” tag line. I believe Chad also said 70% of all aluminum is still in use today, being constantly recycled. That’s pretty amazing. Chad points out these are NOT for hot drinks, and for microwave or dishwasher, but they can be handwashed and reused. Way better than foam cups that seem to stay unrecycled forever.

Dick’s Gadget Warehouse & How To Submit Your Video And Win An Autographed MAD Magazine.
Our viewer video email this week is from Adam Jakowenko. Adam shows us another fun handheld game most of us hadn’t seen before. Here’s his email:
Hi Dick & Chad:
Thought I’d share with you a little gadget/toy I got as a gift that’s a fun way to pass the time for kids or adults. I keep it in my home office and when I have some downtime I grab it and play for a few minutes to break up the day, and when our friends kids come over (socially distanced outside of course) they like to play with it.
p.s. I only show one mode in the video but “memory mode” is also fun as it lights up a series of colors then they go away, and you have to remember them and match up the corners just like with the other games. Obviously this gets hard pretty quickly…it’s basically like Simon with an added twist (pun intended).

We’d love to include your video in an upcoming Giz Wiz Show! Here’s what we’re looking for! Your home shot video – 2 to 3 minutes long, in any of the following categories:
I bought a piece of crap: Did you buy something you ended up hating? We won’t get you a refund, but we might be able to give a platform to vent your disappointment. Remember, “family friendly” language applies.
–
I invented this! Did you invent something? (Or did a friend or relative invent something.) We can’t market it for you, but we can help get the word out. Show us what it is, and how it works. Even if it’s a prototype, you can get our (and the audience) reactions. No professional ads please.
–
My Gadget Warehouse: Okay, so you don’t have a warehouse. It doesn’t matter. Just tell us about your favorite old gadget(s). When and where you bought it, and why you’re still hanging on to it.
–
My Favorite Gadget (favorite old, or favorite new): Show us what it is, tell us what it does and why you love, or loved it! It can be a new gadget you just bought too.
–
Post them on YouTube and send us the link! We’ll do the rest. (Or possibly nothing, but that’s unlikely.) Remember, videos should be just 2 to 3 minutes long! Low production value is fine, but we should be able to hear you and see you! If we select and show your video on The Giz Wiz you’ll earn a tiny amount of fame (hopefully). And if you live in the US, you’ll also get an autographed 38+ year old Alfred E. Neuman picture and a MAD surprise (most likely the current issue of MAD.) But no matter where you live outside of US, I can autograph an Alfred E. Neuman photo to you, scan it & email you a high res copy if we show your video. Just print it out, frame it, or just hang it up and no one will know it’s a copy. We’ve tested it out and fans say they look terrific! If you submitting warehouse videos for a second, third time, etc., you’ll get the current issue of MAD as a thank you.
All show submissions go to mail@gizwiz.tv
