After having a piece in every MAD Magazine for the past 450+ issues (and still counting), I have a lot of MAD stuff!
When I wrote a new MAD paperback or had something published I really liked, I would call the distribution warehouse where MAD books and magazines were stored and buy a case or two. The plan was to store it in a warehouse until it was worth a ton of money. Then I would put it on sale and start raking in the cash! As you may have heard or read elsewhere, storing all this crap in a warehouse turned out to be quite stupid. Almost 30 years of storage right in the heart of high rent New York City, just two blocks from Gizneyland cost about $85,000 so far! I’ll never make it back, but –oh well, that’s water under the bridge. (So much better for me to think of it that way, than the more realistic “cash down the drain!”)
I hope you find something you like to buy for yourself, or as a gift to someone you don’t particularly care about. Anything you spend goes toward keeping Dick’s Gadget Warehouse alive. (Or least the part I rent.) Most everything that can be autographed is personally autographed to you, or whomever you want. Right now this page is set up so you have to order each MAD “gem/trash” separately. Since you pay postage per item, I try to add a “surprise” to each multi-order to cover any extra money you may have paid. Thanks for stopping by.

Another MAD Paperback Book uncovered in Dick’s Gadget Warehouse!
It’s MAD TALES FROM THE SCHOOL OF HARD YOCKS!
Written by Dick DeBartolo, Illustrated by Harry North.
They’ve been sitting in a sealed carton since 1991! And if you don’t believe me, just see the ‘warehouse yellow’ that has gracefully settled on most of the page edges!
These are first edition, uncirculated copies. They’re also unsold copies, which is why they’re in the warehouse!
The title of this book has very little to do with the contents. As William M. Gaines, MAD founder & publisher told me when I started writing original MAD paperback books: “You have to come up with a attention-getting presentation to get your advance. “So give them a catchy title. Then write a page of contents that sounds excting! Then once the publisher signs off on it, go and write the book you want to write! The contents can change from what you presented, but you have to keep the same title!”
So Tales from The School of Hard Yocks is nothing about School – but it does come with a Diploma! It contains a mystery story solved by Lance Boil – more than a Notary Public, less than a Notary Private. There’s a Show Biz Saga – “Give These Retards to Broadway” And a several part western: How the West Was One, How the West Was Two, How the West was Three & How the West was Four! There’s even an opera: “If She Wants To Wriggle, Let ‘er”.
I wasn’t sure how to price this paperback book, so I turned to EBay. There are many used copies there starting at $10.45 a copy. I figured mine are brand new, so I’ll price them at $10.45 too. And my book will be personally autographed to you (or someone else)! First Class postage in a padded envelope is $2.99, Cheap. (Sorry, but USA orders only.)
So if you want the brand new, first edition, uncirculated, personally autographed copy click the BUY link below! If I sell 38 copies it will be enough to pay one month’s rent on Dick’s Gadget Warehouse. (Yes, true.)
Sorry, but US orders only. Thanks.
Your book comes with it’s own OFFICIAL Diploma from THE SCHOOL OF HARD YOCKS! It’s suitable from framing assuming you have a real cheap frame and don’t care what kind of garbage you hang on your walls! Also cutting out the diploma ruins the book, because it’s the back cover! Hopefully you’ll buy a another copy if you do cut it out!
